Yield and Thinning Experiments

Long-term yield and thinning experiments with indigenous tree species

Project No. P/5/2, Projekt leader Dipl.-Ing. Günter Rössler

Long-term yield and thinning experiments with exotic tree species

Project No. P/5/3, Project leader Dipl.-Ing. Ferdinand Kristöfel

New thinning experiments with Norway spruce, pine and beech

Project No. P/5/5, Project leader Dipl.-Ing. Günter Rössler

The three projects listed above are long-term research activities designed to provide information about the growth behaviour of various tree species. The silvicultural and operational effects of different treatment strategies are taken into account.

It is hoped that the expected findings on growth and growth behaviour can be used to develop decision-support systems helping to elaborate appropriate thinning methods and to assess growth and yield of exotic species.

The long-term experiments, some of which date back to the 19th century have provided information on general growth patterns and offer valuable reference material in the study of current questions such as on growth changes following environmental changes.

Current silvicultural and economic issues and the necessity to replace experimental plots which are phased out require the continuous updating of the projects.
