The Federal Research and Training Centre for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape has provided literature information services since 1950 . At present, more than 110.000 mainly German quotations from specialised literature are stored in the computer assisted Literature documentation and information system of the BFW.
The files can be retrieved using multidimensional search criteria. The programe is supported by an userfriendly help function.
Initially, literature documentation was organised by means of card catalogues, classification systems and filing according to subject areas. Until 1956, books and jouranls were listed following the "„Flury-System“.
In 1957, this was changed to the „Oxford –Decimal Classifications for Forestry" (ODC), known since 1990 under the name "Forest Decimal Classification" (FDC).
In 1998, the then dialogue oriented literature database system „GOLEM“ has been replaced by the library management system BIS-C 2000 which can be accessed via Intranet and Internet.

The task of the information service is to advise the scientific staff of the BFW how to access additional information sources and to show solutions how to better use scientific information offered by the World Wide Web.
Free-of-charge and payable literature databases from in- and outside Austria area also accessible for BFW staff. At present, the following information media, expert information systems and full text journals are accessible via Inter- or Intranet at the BFW:
"forestscience.info" with more than 600.000 Notationen since 1939 CABI, "Current Contents Connect" (CCC) vom Thomson ISI, electronic scientific journals (e-Journals) of Kluwer" and the journal
Springer and Blackwell.
Scientists interested in forestry issues may do literature search free of charge via "WebOpac" in the literature database of the International
Union of Forest Research Organization (IUFRO), of the Austrian Federal Office and Research Centre for Forests (BFW) and the Link-database of the BFW which is under construction. Further media such as "Woods of the World" with a list of forestry and wood
technological characteristics of some 1000 tree species based on CD-technology, are made available to the scientific staff of the BFW.
Given the mass of internet information it is sometimes difficult to keep track of these valuable resources. But there are search tools which provide an easy access to published scientific information.
A discussion with the staff of the library may give you some ideas for efficient search strategies. Often, it may be enough just to access the homepages of related national or international research institutions in order to be able to use the scientific databases, bibliographies, publication lists or project information.

Experts in translation, photographic laboratory, layout and printing are active in the development of publications. Most of the time, also close cooperation with the Division of Public relations is necessary to complete a publication.
The publications of the Federal Research and Training Centre
for Forests, Natural Hazards and Landscape are the result of the scientific, advisory and practically
oriented activities of the BFW.
The following publication series are completed by the printing shop of the BFW according to up-to-date digital printing or traditional offset-printing techniques and may be ordered from the library of the BFW.
